The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986

This Act provides the framework for protecting and improving environmental quality, controlling pollution, and setting standards for hazardous substances. It empowers the central government to take measures to protect and improve environmental quality, including laying down standards for emissions and effluents.

The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974

Aimed at preventing and controlling water pollution, this Act establishes central and state pollution control boards. It regulates the discharge of pollutants into water bodies and sets standards for effluent quality.

The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981

This Act focuses on preventing and controlling air pollution. It mandates the establishment of central and state pollution control boards to monitor air quality, regulate emissions from industries and vehicles, and enforce air quality standards.

The Wildlife Protection Act, 1972

This Act provides for the protection of wildlife and their habitats. It prohibits hunting of endangered species and regulates trade in wildlife and their derivatives. The Act also establishes protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980

Aimed at conserving forests and biodiversity, this Act regulates the diversion of forest land for non-forest purposes. It requires prior approval from the central government for any project that involves the use of forest land.

The Biological Diversity Act, 2002

This Act aims to conserve biological diversity in India. It provides mechanisms for sustainable use of biological resources, equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use, and establishment of biodiversity management committees at local levels.

The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016

These rules govern the management, handling, and disposal of hazardous and other wastes. They outline procedures for their safe handling, treatment, and disposal to prevent environmental and health hazards.

The National Green Tribunal Act, 2010

This Act establishes the National Green Tribunal (NGT) as a specialised judicial body for effective and expeditious disposal of cases related to environmental protection, conservation of forests and other natural resources.
